There’s something truly special about engagement sessions — that blend of excitement, tenderness, and anticipation as two people prepare to begin the rest of their lives together. As a photographer, I love when a session captures not just the couple’s love story, but also the personality of the place where that story unfolds. Julie and Shaun’s engagement session at the Cheshire Rod and Gun Club in Upstate New York was exactly that — a perfect mix of warmth, laughter, and stunning scenery.
When Julie first told me that she and Shaun wanted to do their engagement photos at the Cheshire Rod and Gun Club, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. Not only is it a beautiful, rustic location nestled in the heart of Upstate New York, but it’s also extra meaningful for them — it’s the exact spot where they’ll be saying “I do” in just a couple of months!
There’s something magical about photographing a couple at their future wedding venue. There’s this quiet sense of anticipation that hangs in the air — like the place already knows it’s going to be part of something big. As soon as I arrived, I could feel it. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect: soft golden sunlight filtering through the trees, a light breeze that gave every shot a touch of movement, and that calm, countryside quiet that makes every sound feel more intimate.
From the moment I met Julie and Shaun, I knew this was going to be a fun session. They have this natural energy together — full of laughter and inside jokes, but also this calm sense of connection that shines through even when they’re just standing side by side.
Julie looked absolutely radiant in a soft, flowy dress that caught the evening light beautifully, while Shaun kept it classic and relaxed with jeans and a crisp shirt that complemented the rustic setting. They were both a little nervous at first (most couples are!), but it only took a few minutes before they completely relaxed into the session. Once we got going, it felt like they forgot the camera was even there — and that’s when the real magic happens.
The Cheshire Rod and Gun Club has so many unique backdrops for photos. We started near the open fields where the sunlight stretched across the grass like liquid gold. I love using natural light in my sessions — that golden hour glow just wraps around couples and adds such warmth and romance to every image.
As Julie and Shaun walked hand in hand through the fields, I caught those in-between moments — the laughter after a whispered joke, the way Julie leaned into Shaun’s shoulder, the little glances that say so much without words. Those are my favorite kinds of photos — the ones that feel like tiny snapshots of real love, not just poses.
After the field, we wandered toward the wooded trails behind the clubhouse. The trees were just starting to shift into early fall colors, and the filtered light created this dreamy, cinematic vibe. I had them stop for a moment to just breathe and take in the view, and that’s when I snapped one of my favorite shots of the entire session — Julie resting her head on Shaun’s shoulder while they looked out over the quiet woods. Simple, genuine, timeless.
One of the highlights of this engagement session was getting a little sneak peek of where Julie and Shaun will be tying the knot soon. The Cheshire Rod and Gun Club has such a charming setup for weddings — rustic yet elegant, with plenty of space for guests to enjoy the outdoors.
We spent a few minutes near the ceremony area, where the chairs will eventually be lined up and the arch will stand. I asked Julie and Shaun to imagine the moment they’ll be standing there in just a few short months, surrounded by their friends and family. Instantly, I could see the excitement and love wash over them. It was such a sweet, emotional moment.
Sessions like this are one of my favorite parts of being a photographer. I get to see a glimpse of the future — two people on the edge of something beautiful, standing in the very place where their biggest day will unfold. It’s a privilege to be invited into that space, even just for an evening.
As the sun dipped lower, the light just kept getting better. I swear, some evenings feel like nature itself is rooting for you — and this was one of them. The golden light reflected off the tall grass, turning everything into a soft, glowing canvas.
We took advantage of that golden hour to grab a few more romantic shots and quiet moments where Julie and Shaun just held each other while the world around them seemed to fade away. Those final shots before sunset are always my favorites. There’s a calmness that settles in — no rush, no posing, just two people completely present with each other.
When I packed up my gear and said goodbye to Julie and Shaun that evening, I couldn’t help but feel excited for their upcoming wedding. Their love is so genuine, so effortless — and I know their wedding day at the Cheshire Rod and Gun Club will be full of laughter, happy tears, and unforgettable moments.
Engagement sessions like this one remind me why I love what I do. Every couple brings their own story, their own energy, and their own little world into the frame. My job is simply to honor that — to capture the real, the beautiful, and the perfectly imperfect moments that make their story theirs.
Since so many couples ask me for advice when planning their engagement photos, I thought I’d share a few tips inspired by Julie and Shaun’s session:
As I look through the gallery from Julie and Shaun’s engagement session, I can’t help but smile. Each photo tells a little piece of their love story — from playful moments in the field to quiet reflections under the trees. And the best part? This is just the beginning.
In a couple of months, we’ll be back at the Cheshire Rod and Gun Club, only this time, it’ll be for their wedding day. I can already picture the joy, the laughter, the music, and the magic of that celebration. If their engagement session was any indication, it’s going to be an unforgettable day — and I can’t wait to capture every second of it.
If you’re planning your own engagement session in Upstate New York, I’d love to chat!
